Spring 2011: Course Descriptions
Discipleship 101 Series (Developed from “Living the Spirit Formed Life” by Jack Hayford)
12-Week Course. The overall objective of this course is to encourage growth in the individual beyond personal development. The students, if they accept the challenge will be prepared for discipling other believers towards maturity. This will be a very active time of study, specifically targeting areas of growth in “lifestyle” change from carnal to a kingdom mindset.
1. Committing to Hear God: DS 105
How and when does God speak? Is it only in personal prayer time, when the minister is speaking “thus saith the lord”? Or does He actually speak in an innocent child’s question to me? Does God speak all the time and I am just not willing to listen for His voice? Students will be encouraged “to purpose to hear from Him,” with the expectation they will.
2. Celebrating the Lord’s Table: DS 110
The taking of communion has implication and impact far beyond the monthly observance or act. The frequency of how often we partake of the elements has less significance when compared to what our mindset should be before, during, and after the moment of eating the ‘body’ and drinking the ‘blood’. The students will be shown how the partaking of communion is more an example of who I am as a man/woman of God and how this very act testifies of personal choices I have made as a believer.
3. Walking in the Spirit of God’s Forgiveness: DS 115
If I don’t forgive, if I don’t believe it’s necessary to expose myself again and again to be hurt by my brother all that I do as a man and woman of God is in vain. This course delves more fully into consequences of forgiving sin in our personal lives and the resultant change it has upon us. The course will show how if we accept that we are forgiven of what we have done; if we accept we are forgiven of what we not only might and will do; then we must, as believers, render the same degree and depth of forgiveness to those who offend us. Because He forgave us, we must forgive others.
4. Feeding On God’s Word: DS 120
The Word of God is the most enriching nourishment I can ever expect to receive. When Jesus said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by ever word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” He meant it literally. This course will break open this scripture and show what all it provides in the body of Christ, inclusive of the physical, spiritual, emotional, and intellectual needs of man.
5. Maintaining Integrity of Heart: DS 125
There are not many defensive positions we are encouraged to take in the Word of God. We are to live life on the offense, taking back what the enemy has illegally stolen from us. But in our offensive campaign, we are cautioned to guard our hearts and our minds. If we do not, the result can lead to our testimony, and that of God’s saving grace, being compromised by sin and carnal influences. A little leaven can leaven the whole loaf is a truth most easily seen when we fail to guard our hearts and mind. This course will show the student how maintaining integrity is practically done in their lives.
6. Living A Life of Submission: DS 130
This class explores fully what is involved in being submitted to God. We will discuss, expose, and make clear the misconceptions surrounding the subject of submission; and how we as believers should respond to it.
Extension Courses
These classes are intended to vary from lighter content, to a more relaxed exploration of subject matter relating to and from the church going experience, the life and walk of a believer and a basic understanding of the bible and what it has to say to its reader. The information provided is all biblically based and sound, but designed so that it covers those “I always wanted to know” type of questions we all have had from time to time, but never had an opportunity to get answers. Here is a secret we’ll share now, the lessons learned are not meant to be used solely while attending church. You’ll be surprised and pleased to find they have direct application in your everyday life.
1. Changing the World 1 Soul @ A Time
While the title of this course also serves as the mission statement of our church, it is none-the-less relevant to the life of every believer, regardless of their church affiliation. This course will explore and delve into the charge given by Jesus in Matthew 28 when He told the disicples to go into the world and share what they had learned. The class will take what Jesus meant as a global directive and bring it down to the level of personal activity and how we are able to fulfill this mission 1 person at a time.
2. Spiritual Authority
Watchman Nee has written a wonderful book on understanding submission and authority, specifically as it relates to church governance. Many do serve in churches, ministries, and on various church boards while never fully accepting the headship of the leader. Whether it is from their belief they are more talented, a better leader, or just don’t like the way things are done; it is still rebellion. This class explores what Spiritual Authority is all about and how it flows from the throne of God, down to the lay person in ministry. It is a clear and sobering look at submission to authority and how it honors God.
3. Dissatisfaction with Privilege
You’re a faithful servant, talented beyond your wildest dreams and anxious to serve. You know it, others see and compliment it and your Pastor rewards you giving you responsibility and authority in a visible leadership role. And for a time you’re satisfied, happy to be serving until it occurs to you some of your gifts are being underutilized. There is more that you can do. You’re ready for a bigger challenge. Your impatience over a “perceived oversight” of your true capabilities causes you to become agitated as you see another in a role you know you are more suited to have. What do you do? Wait for pastor to realize his mistake or do you with godly humility let him know you’re ready for more…come find out how a man named Korah handled the very same situation and see God’s response to him.
4. Church-‘ese’
Have you ever sat in a church service and wondered what some of the cool catchy phrases meant? Have you ever joined a church and or worked in a ministry and found everyone there spoke a language other than English. You heard the words they were saying, you thought you knew their meaning, but clearly you didn’t because for the life of you, these people are starting to sound like Charlie Brown’s School teacher saying, “Whah..whah..whah”. Church-ese is a fun look and exploration of what some of those phrases really mean.
5. Bible Basics: Why is that there?
Not to insult anyone, this course is designed for the new babe in Christ who is unfamiliar with the significance of their bible, characters discussed, as well as the significance of certain acts. Modeled after the “For Dummies…” book series that are hugely successful, this course will discuss such things as the significance of Adam’s sin and its impact on all mankind; what is this Scarlet Thread of Redemption; why is Abraham so important…It will also cover other people, places, and events.
